GOAL: Create a brand and quarterly magazine that dives into the human experience by presenting diverse perspectives gathered around the same theme.

CONCEPT: As humans, we assign meaning to words based on our personal experience. As a result, each unique individual often has their own unique understanding of the same word. With this in mind, The Drift focuses on examining a single word from multiple storyteller’s point of view.

SOLUTION: The Drift magazine.

Aiming to inspire curiosity and broaden perspectives by sharing human experiences through an empathetic, honest, and thoughtful voice. Let's talk about the hard stuff that comprises much of the human experience. Let’s reframe this stuff in a “glass half-full”, “you are going to be okay”, “everything hard is good” - kind of way.   Let’s do this with the goal of encouraging readers to consider a new perspective, and inspire them to see the world through someone else’s human experience.

RESEARCH + DISCOVERY

Separation is defined as the action or state of moving, being moved apart, disconnection, division, and sorting. The definition itself has no positive or negative connotation. However, as we go through life we added definitions of words, adding meaning to them, based on our personal experiences. We might make choices that result in separation or we might be subjected to something outside our control that results in separation. Similarly, the outcome of the separation might be positive, neutral, or negative. Regardless of one circumstance, separation is indicative of change and change is often indicative of fear and uncertainty. Research suggests hearing and seeing stories about others who have survived similar challenges inspires people who are struggling to keep going and seek positive outcomes.

READERS + BRAND

Leading with warm tones and simple illustrations the reader is guided on a journey of empowered reflection. The target reader is a female identified human, engaged in the world, who champions a thoughtful compassionate outlook on life. LEARNINGS + NEXT STEPS:

Creating this magazine allowed me to gain further experience in InDesign and diving deep into a brand construct. Additionally, I enjoyed sourcing articles, images, and creating illustrated doodles for this project. I leveraged this capstone project as a way to play with type, color, and layout while giving myself some guidelines and some leniencies along the way. I would love to contribute illustrations and layout to brands in the future.
